Bareknuckle prize fights in the nineteenth century were illegal, uncompromising, bruising and bloody affairs where injury was the norm and even death sometimes occurred.
Because of the courage and boldness required to be a prize fighter the successful pugilists were the sporting heroes of the day and received adulation, financial reward and an elevated status they could never otherwise have hoped to achieve. Ben Caunt was one of these bold gladiators. |
